Hey there, my dearest readers! During my recent search for podcast equipment that I will be using in my upcoming podcasts, I found a great set of must-have accessories and I cannot wait to share them with you. If you are a beginner like me, continue with me on this journey.

The Best Podcast Equipment for Beginners

You do not need to spend a high upfront cost to get a professional-level podcast. In fact, in my research, I found that two items are just more than enough, and they may cost you only $250.

I recommend this minimalist setup to beginners since it is very reliable.

RODE PodMic USB Microphone Available at just $182
Audio-Technica ATH-M20x Available at just $58

RODE PodMic USB Microphone

I must tell you this is the best microphone that has lasted years. It sounds amazing, it is reliable, and one of the few mics that is comfortable to carry in any backpack. It is one of the best in budget and performs well in studio and stage performances.

It easily connects to any device and allows you to record quickly. Being an ultra-versatile dynamic microphone, it discards background noise, and you get a high-quality recording, be it at home, a hotel, or a closet.

It comes with a USB connector and XLR output, so you can connect it directly into your computer or use an audio interface. You will also receive a mic stand, a windscreen, and cables at just $190.

Audio-Technica ATH-M20x

There are multiple reasons that I cannot ignore what the Audio-Technica ATH-M20x brings. However, wired headphones also perform great. A wired headphone allows you to check your voice and environment so that you manage the audio quality issues immediately before they become a big issue. It costs just $59.

Headphones also reject mic-bleed, where the audio of your guest spills over the track just like a quiet echo.

Next, wired headphones have a latency of 5ms compared to the 160-260ms in wireless headphones like AirPods. This makes the difference between listening to something practically compared to listening to your own voice with a lag.

I personally felt this headphone should be on the bucket list of a new beginner as they are lightweight, comfortable and do not bother you much like wireless headphones. So, choose whatever wired headphones you feel good in.

Boom Arm (TONOR or InnoGear)

These microphone stands are made of premium cast metal, which makes them quite sturdy. The main difference you will find between this mic stand and others is its internal springs and max bearing capacity of 4.4 lbs. You can easily hold it.

What Equipment Do You Need For a Podcast?

Budget Setup ($80-150)

Microphone (FIFINE K668B) Available at $17
Headphones (Audio-Technica ATH-M20x) Available at $58
Boom Arm (TONOR or InnoGear) Available at $63

Microphone (FIFINE K668B)

My recommendation for a budget setup will always include a K668 USB condenser microphone. It is the bare essentials. The frequency response is listed as 50 Hz- 16 kHz, which is great for a cardioid microphone of such size. Honestly speaking, the frequency response is irrelevant because the audio clips are at such a low level. It just costs $18, which is quite affordable. You can simply plug and start playing.

Headphones (Audio-Technica ATH-M20x)

As discussed above, this is a perfect headphone for beginners at just $59. It is a great choice for tracking and mixing. Its modern design and high-quality materials come together to deliver a convenient listening experience with improved audio and effective isolation.

Boom Arm (TONOR or InnoGear)

TONOR arm stand is another essential while starting a podcast equipment needed. I found this microphone a lot better than other budget arm stands. If you are looking for a budget arm stand that is durable as well as sustainable, choose Tonor. It even comes with a wind screen which fits great on the Blue Yeti.

Pop Filter

You can buy any pop filter to protect from noise. It will prevent harsh ‘P’ and ‘B’ sounds. For a budget pop filter, you can choose K&M Popkiller, which comes at only $40.

This podcast equipment bundle is ideal for solo podcasts, interviews over Zoom or YouTube voiceovers.

Mid-Range Setup ($250-500)

Microphone (RODE NT-USB+) Available at $156
Audio Interface (Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th Gen) Available at $159
Headphones (Sony MDR-7506) Available at $113

During my search, I also explored some mid-range podcast equipment.

Microphone (RODE NT-USB+)

This microphone is a professional one that offers excellent performance for recording voices and instruments, gaming and livestreaming, podcasting and much more. It delivers great audio, elegant looks and high-end features. With this microphone, you do not need to think about a pop filter and tripod, because it comes with them. And the amazing part is the zero-latency.

Audio Interface (Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th Gen)

The Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th Gen is a very popular USB-C audio interface for solo creators. It features a studio-level 120 dB dynamic range at just $160. I personally liked the ultra-low noise feature that allows you to capture a microphone and a guitar at the same time.

Headphones (Sony MDR-7506)

These over-ear headphones come at $113 and provide multiple professional-grade features, from a dynamic closed-back design to wired connection features. It is a professional headphone for recording, mixing and mastering. Hence, this deserves a place in the list of mid-range podcast equipment.

Shock Mount

A shock mount can help you upgrade your audio setup. You can enjoy clear, crisp recordings by isolating your microphone from external speakers. So, if you are using condenser microphones, I highly recommend having a shock mount.

Boom Arm (RODE PSA1)

This $94 professional studio boom arm allows you easy and precise placement of any microphone while podcasting, streaming or recording. Its durable design and noise-free operation are great for home, studio and office use. Hence, you can include it in your podcast equipment list.

All-in-One Podcast Setup

RODE PodMic USB Available at $182
RODE RODECaster Duo Available at $411
Shure MV7+ Available at $299

RODE PodMic USB

As I discussed, PodMic USB features strong on-board Digital Signal Processing, which makes it convenient for users to capture professional audio. Track your audio with zero latency because of the headphone out. This is a perfect recording solution for professional-level podcasters. However, noteworthy is the expensive price point, as it costs around $209.

RODE RODECaster Duo

As per my research, the RODECaster Duo is the most powerful all-in-one audio protection tool in the world. If you want a professional-level podcast, it gives you everything you need to sound great. It is full of cutting-edge next-gen features and powered by a high-performance quad-core audio engine. I must say, this is all you need to create unique content.

Shure MV7+

The Shure MV7+ is an upgraded version of the famous MV7 microphone. It offers both USB and XLR connectivity for versatile recording scenarios. It costs around $279 but offers that level of sound quality and features. MV7+ has the bonus protection from environmental recording attributes naturally just by having dynamic features. However, I noticed its noise cancellation was quite good.

Tips for Using Podcast Equipment Effectively

I also want to share some important tips that I learned from many peers about effectively using podcast equipment.

Start small: Every extra cable or piece of gear may expose another phase of failure

Don’t get trapped by the hype: Every few months, you will find a new set of gear. However, it is always better to understand how to use your existing gear instead of buying new gadgets every few months unnecessarily.

Evaluate reliability: It would be worse if you mess up a recording because of equipment breakdown. So always choose podcast equipment based on reliability and sustainability.

Improve your recording surroundings: Equipment can save so many problems, but you can improve the audio significantly by switching off the AC. You can record in a room with carpet and some sound treatment for a better user experience.

Summary

There are many options available in the market. However, if you are a beginner, it is always better to do some research before investing your hard-earned money. You can follow my recommendations or do some research on your own. I hope this guide will help you successfully conduct your first podcast. Best of luck in advance!
