Microsoft Brings Call of Duty for Nintendo Switch in a 10-Year Deal

Activision created the first-person shooter video game franchise Call of Duty. World War II-themed video games were its initial focus when it initially launched in 2003. The Cold War, futuristic worlds, and the present day have all been settings for games in this series over the years. After that, Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games contributed to the game’s development. Other developers produced several spin-offs and portable games. Call of Duty for Nintendo Switch, a handheld/home console combination, would be ideal for pick-up-and-play online sessions.

On October 28, 2022, the most recent game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, was made available. Infinity Ward created the first in 2003 and second in 2005 titles in the series, and Treyarch created the third, with the series initially focusing on a World War II setting (2006). Even though the Call of Duty series is among the most well-known on the planet, other types of games immediately come to mind when considering the Call of Duty for Nintendo Switch. Therefore, in a certain sense, it is incredibly odd to see Microsoft come out tonight and declare a “10-year commitment” to COD game releases on Nintendo systems, starting with the Switch.

Popularity and Evolution of the Call of Duty Game

Although the series was first only designed for Windows, later iterations were released on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, and OS X, among many other platforms. The free-to-play online battle royale game Call of Duty: Warzone, which pits 150 players against each other at once, was published by Activision in 2020, expanding the company’s reach even further. Warzone rivaled some major battle royale industry juggernauts, such as Fortnite and Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds, with 60 million players just two months following its launch.

Even though Call of Duty is typically associated with consoles, the mobile version has also been a huge hit. The game’s initial few months after its release in October 2019 saw 250 million downloads worldwide, considerably exceeding the numbers for its shooter competitors, PUBG Mobile and Fortnite. In its first two months of availability, the mobile game was downloaded 28.5 million times in the United States, which was its most prominent regional market. In fact, in the first two months following the game’s release, American players spent more than 36 million dollars overall on in-game purchases within the mobile app.

Call of Duty, which has annual series releases in the fall, has established its brand as a cornerstone in the PC and console gaming market. It has consistently dominated the charts until the next release is released. The three main narrative foundations of the Call of Duty universe—Modern Warfare, the Black Ops story arc, and the original series’ emphasis on a World War II setting—were later added to the main series.

The History behind Call of Duty and Nintendo

Call of Duty was previously released on Nintendo platforms, as was already established. The Wii got some of the series’ most well-known installments, including Ghosts, Black Ops, Modern Warfare 3, and several others. On the other hand, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 offered better performance and visual quality. For the portable Nintendo DS, Call of Duty has produced exclusive games. They could have produced better outcomes and were not big championships. A couple of these are Black Ops DS and Modern Warfare: Mobilized. The performance and visual quality were downgraded, which resulted in a drab experience. On then-available, more powerful systems, players choose to play the game.

Everything to know about the Call of Duty Nintendo Switch Deal

Microsoft claims it has a contract with Nintendo to bring the Call of Duty Nintendo to its systems for ten years, a key victory in its fight to complete the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The agreements put pressure on Sony, which has been known to be pleading with US, UK, and European Union authorities to reject the $68.7 billion merger because it is anti-competitive.

The primary foundation of Sony’s argument is its concern that Microsoft would make the hugely popular Call of Duty series exclusive only to Xbox, giving it a competitive edge over Sony’s PlayStation consoles.

However, Microsoft has consistently refuted claims that it will do this, claiming it would not be profitable. Furthermore, they have also cited the case of Minecraft, which it has continued to make available on PlayStation and other platforms since it acquired Mojang’s company in 2014. The company then stressed the point by announcing that it had offered Sony a deal to retain Call of Duty on the PlayStation for ten years.

Since doing so would weaken its argument before regulators, Sony has neither accepted nor responded to this offer. However, the conclusion of comparable agreements with significant participants in the market, like Nintendo and Valve, gives Microsoft’s argument weight and puts pressure on Sony to honor Microsoft’s pledges in good faith.

Why was there no Call of Duty for Nintendo Switch before?

Although it is challenging to say, it is most likely that the Switch doesn’t have any Call of Duty titles because of the system’s relatively underpowered nature. It is undeniable that the Switch can produce some stunning images (look at Luigi’s Mansion 3, Super Mario Odyssey, etc.), but it cannot compete with the Xbox Series X and PS5. Even if some game engines do not run on the Switch, this should create custom alternatives. Numerous COD games with poorer visuals were released on the Wii. Some of them, like the beloved Black Ops II, were ported to Nintendo’s less well-known Wii U console.

Some Implications that Nintendo Switch might have While Playing the Game

In 2017, Nintendo Switch Console was formally released. The Tegra X1 CPU was released in 2015; therefore, it was already behind its rivals. Nintendo only wanted game lovers to have fun, not for the console to become the massive success that it has. However, many current-gen games were ported to the platform due to their popularity, and it handled them remarkably well. Along with a few others, these games featured Witcher 3, Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, and Doom Eternal. The creators managed to run those games on obsolete technology, despite the significant trade-offs they entail. Even though this is good news for COD fans who buy a Switch, titles from the franchise will likely experience significant downgrades. Aside from the plot and gameplay, Call of Duty games feature considerable technical improvements.

As of 2022, Modern Warfare 2 has some of the best graphics. To appreciate this graphical richness fully, one needs to have sufficient hardware. Modern Warfare 2 on last-gen consoles does not provide the best gaming experience. The most recent COD game offers the finest gameplay on current-generation consoles (Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PCs).

The Nintendo Switch is entirely incompetent compared to comparable contemporary systems in terms of computing power. The Switch, as previously established, has a Tegra X1 chip, which is significantly less capable than the PS4 and Xbox One from the last generation. In terms of performance during each generation, Xbox and PlayStation consoles have consistently outperformed Nintendo gaming systems. However, Nintendo makes up for it with its games’ distinctive aesthetic and excellent storytelling combined with fantastic gameplay.

What are the Possibilities Related to Playing Call of Duty on the Nintendo Switch?

Although it is unclear whether crucial Call of Duty titles will be made accessible on the Switch directly, there are two ways that Microsoft may bring the franchise to Nintendo’s current-generation hardware:

  • Downgraded Versions

Games from the Call of Duty series might be reduced to work on the Switch. As was the case in the past, the experience will be subpar and may not satisfy enthusiasts. These alternatives will compromise the enjoyment of the franchise. The game will likely be released on all Nintendo devices.

  • Cloud Gaming on Xbox

Microsoft may use a cloud-based service to send the newest COD titles to the Switch. Microsoft already offers Xbox Cloud Gaming, a service that has an extensive library of outstanding games.

It will be a game-changer when Call of Duty launches on Nintendo Switch. However, some supporters question the decision concerning Call of Duty for Nintendo Switch. They assert that fans will receive a diluted experience from the series on the Switch that will be unfavorable. Additionally, because the creators would have to create games using the Switch’s hardware as a starting point, the game’s arrival on Switch will impede developments in the COD franchise’s aesthetics and technology. Moreover, the Nintendo Switch price is another aspect that must be kept in mind and will influence gamers’ decisions in favor of the move.
