A project named CAVForth which involves a fleet of five driverless buses will be operating services over a frequent timetable between the two hubs, which are Edinburgh and Fife. It is also predicted that the service will be catering to 10,000 passenger journeys per week.
Operator Stagecoach, which runs the Megabus franchise, Scottish Citylink, and Sheffield-based Supertram network, will be using a fleet of Alexander Dennis Enviro200AV vehicles, and they will be operating on a 14-mile route which will be in fixed conditions and t speeds of up to 50mph from 15 May.
The Routes which will be Covered:

Membership of the Project:
Since this is a large-scale project. So, it is natural there will be a good number of members responsible for initiating the project. Well, folks, the project is a joint venture consisting of six organizations: Fusion Processing, Stagecoach, Alexander Dennis, Transport Scotland, Edinburgh Napier University, and Bristol Robotics Lab – and they will be the UK’s first registered bus service for using driverless vehicles. Also, two staff members will be on-board during a typical service which includes a safety driver, who will be sitting in the driver’s cab and responsible for ensuring that the technology works smoothly. A Captain will also be present will be supervising the passenger compartment to check tickets and answer questions.
The Reaction of the Minister of Transport:
Well, since this is a mass public service and one of its kind, the reaction of the higher ministry is something to look forward to. The transport minister said, “This is an exciting milestone for this innovative and ambitious project, and I very much look forward to seeing Project CAVForth take to the roads next month.
“Our trunk road network can provide a wide range of environments as a diverse testing ground, and it (the project) will help Scotland establish its credentials on the world stage.”
Modifications which are Underway:

The safety driver training is underway for the project, and with 20 staff members, it will complete the training before its launch in the next month.

This news has come after the news that the move to autonomous vehicles in public and the freight transportation sector will be slowly gaining traction. The ministers are hoping that the vehicles will eventually offer consumers more convenience by making journeys faster and more reliable as well as it will also be improving safety since it is seen that 88% of road collisions are currently caused by human errors, and there will also be sustainability to encourage people for using public transport.
As per reports, other cities are also exploring introducing driverless buses, however, these are not thought to be advanced as the project in Edinburgh. It is expected that in 2025, 45 driverless electric minibusses will be programmed to run for a year in three of European Cities and they are- Geneva, Switzerland; Kronach, Germany; and Oslo, Norway.
Short trials have also been conducted in several cities like Rome and Seoul.
