Sony has announced three games that are offered free of cost for PlayStation Plus subscribers. These PS Plus free games range from cult classics of the past years to the AAA experiences seen recently. The PlayStation Plus free games are given for PS4 and PS5 consoles only.
New PS Plus – December 2022
Here are three free games available now, and they will become redeemable from December 6, 2022, to January 2, 2023. The titles are Divine Knockout, Biomutant, and Mass Effect Legendary Edition. They are available for PlayStation Plus Essential, PS Extra, and PS Premium subscribers.
1. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
This game is available only on PS4. The legendary edition is an excellent selection as it packages the original trilogy of Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3. It updates it for modern systems, including features such as effective downloadable content (DLC), new visuals, and better performance.
If you have liked the beloved trilogies in gaming, then this one is much better. The first edition, which saw Commander Shepard’s intergalactic adventures and was loved by gamers, will now find the same impact for the Mass Effect legendary edition. If by chance you did not get to play the originals, this collection will ensure that you will find out why there was so much excitement about the game and allows you to join in.
For those gamers who have been out of the loop, they need a quick refresher course; the legendary edition consists of Mass Effect, and the second and third editions, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 remastered games. Mass Effect 2 and 3 editions are direct sequels. The main selling point of the trilogy was that one could carry their choice of role-playing into the next game’s editions. - Masse Effect 2 –The Mass Effect 2 is a leap forward in BioWare’s series. It looks pretty evolved, even without the enhancements in the legendary edition. It adopts a gritter stance compared to the first game, and Commander Shepard is not the cut-and-dry military human. He is roped in to work with Cerberus, an extremist group that believes in humanity first and is out to protect mankind’s colonized worlds. As thousands of humans go missing across the galaxy, Shepard is tasked with assembling a specialist team who can launch a suicide mission against the unknown threat.
- Mass Effect 3 – The first two games are role-playing, having third-person shooter combat. Mass Effect 3 is like a third-person shooter with RPG elements. The final edition is easily the most divisive game. The story of Commander Shepard, the infamous ending, the creative vision, and the direction of Mass Effect 3 will keep gamers talking about it for a long time.
2. Divine Knockout: Founder’s Edition
These free PS Plus games are available on both PS4 and PS5. The founder’s edition of Divine Knockout is launched directly in the PS Plus. The central theme is battling with gods in mythical brawls. You choose from any of the ten gods and battle across arenas and hurl boulders as wielding Mjolnir synonymous with the identity of Thor or as Hercules. The protagonist’s choice of weapons and objects and their mechanics to master the play tell whether they are genuinely worthy.
Divine Knockout introduces an entirely new genre – a third-person platform fighter game. You can imagine a fighter on the platform in side-scrolling mode, and if you spin the camera on the z-axis, you will find yourself dashing, smashing, and jumping in all three directions.
Though there are ten gods, you can play each god in hundreds of ways. A system of talents helps you define a playstyle for each god. For example, as Athena, you can become a long-range spear thrower, a shield bearer focused on teamwork, or an agile expert in martial arts. The same god can work on all these attributes by equipping new talents.
The developers of Divine Knockout, Red Beard Games assure the users that the system is not just pay-to-win. All the players start with fully loaded talents. Additional playtime does not add extra power but only unlocks different options.
Divine Knockout’s playable characters find the divine being put into the mighty gods of myth. As a player, you can be anybody. As Susano, mastering the katana or hurling boulders as Hercules. The ten gods available come from all the myths in the world, representing the Greek, Japanese, Norse, Roman, Arthurian, and Norse pantheons. The developers say that more gods and pantheons will be added regularly.
A player needs timing and positioning to be successful in Divine Knockout. It is not helpful to memorize complicated inputs or combos. Each character has heavy and light attacks that can be used as combos, evading and dodging blows, or for repositioning. These three abilities define the characters, which cool down after use. The ultimate ability is when King Arthur summons the might of Excalibur, his legendary sword.
You can play Divine knockout by exploring game modes in several varieties with the 3v3 Arcade mode or the hardcore 2v2 or 1v1 duels.
3. Biomutant
The Biomutant was developed by Experiment 101, a Swedish developer, and published by THQ Nordic. This game was released in 2021 for PS4, Microsoft Windows, and Xbox One. The versions for PS 5 were released on September 6, 2022.
These new PS Plus games are available on both PS4 and PS5. The game, which was released last year, has divided its players. Some love its customization as one can customize their raccoon killing machine and then get out in the open world, loot, shoot and climb up to the food chain’s top.
Others like its ambition, scope, and beautiful landscape that allows players to explore. Some players prefer to avoid its structure, flat combat, and overwhelming story with irritating narration.
Despite the game’s rough edges, the picturesque world with a sense of isolation and weapons customization that allows one to explore and loot has won many fans. The PS5 upgrades released do not fix some of the fundamental flaws that are inbuilt into the core structure of Bio Mutant. However, they still provide a highly improved experience on a console.
The core of Biomutant remains the same after a visual and performance upgrade, and the upgraded version will not win over those players who the lacking narrative engagement has put off.
The game has the same humanity tale that finds the world taken over by mutated bipedal creatures and humanity driven into extinction. Despite the eradication, the world’s latest iteration is also not faring well. Various tribes occupying different regions are at war with each other. The tree is at the center of the world and providing life to the wasteland are fast getting their energy drained.
The onus of uniting the tribes, bringing harmony to the world, or even aligning with the dark side to see the other side’s scenario falls on the players, who have to create their fuzzy delights.
The overall experience is enhanced through improved performance. The last version of Biomutant experienced farm drops during combat engagements. Even simple explorations came to a standstill. In PS5, the performance mode provides a transformative experience.
Final thoughts
The November 2022 new PS Plus games for PS Plus subscribers have departed from the service, and now subscribers can access a new set of free games in December 2022. As usual, the free set of games consists of three games discussed above in this article. However, in this month’s new PS Plus games, one game has three titles; technically, subscribers get five games free.
